The Chairs Heard ‘Round the World
On March 26, 2025, Marvel Studios did something no blockbuster has ever attempted. They spent nearly five and a half hours livestreaming a row of empty director’s chairs on YouTube, revealing one name at a time. Each chair bore a new actor’s name. Each reveal sent social media into a tailspin. By the time it was over, the biggest superhero ensemble in history had been assembled in front of a global audience, and the internet had collectively lost its mind.
Avengers: Doomsday is not simply bringing back the MCU’s current roster of heroes. It is pulling together characters and actors from entirely separate franchise timelines. Fox’s X-Men. The Fantastic Four. And, at the center of it all, Robert Downey Jr. is returning to the Marvel universe, not as Tony Stark, but as the villain Doctor Doom. That alone would be enough to break the internet. But the full scope of this film goes further than any single casting decision.
Here are the numbers. 27+ confirmed cast members were revealed during the livestream. The Russo Brothers, Anthony and Joe Russo, are directing. The film is scheduled for a December 18, 2026, release date. Production began on April 28, 2025, at Pinewood Studios in Buckinghamshire, England, under the working title “Apple Pie 1.” Filming wrapped on September 19, 2025, with additional photography expected in early 2026. This is the culmination of the Multiverse Saga and a cornerstone of Phase Six.
The livestream wasn’t a trailer. It wasn’t a teaser. It was a five-hour statement of intent. And the statement was clear: everyone is showing up.
The Villain: Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom

A. From Iron Man to Victor von Doom
At San Diego Comic-Con in July 2024, multiple figures in green robes and metal masks filed onto the stage during Marvel’s presentation. One of them removed his mask. It was Robert Downey Jr. The audience erupted. The man who had spent a decade playing Tony Stark across ten MCU films was back. But he was not coming back as Iron Man.
Downey is playing Victor von Doom, a.k.a. Doctor Doom, a completely new character within the MCU. This is not a Tony Stark variant wearing a different costume. This is a different person. The specifics of Doom’s origin within the multiverse remain under wraps, but the creative team has been clear: Downey’s version of Doctor Doom is a standalone character, separate from the Stark legacy.
B. The Doom Premise
Doctor Doom replaces Kang the Conqueror as the primary antagonist of the Multiverse Saga. Jonathan Majors, who had been cast as Kang across multiple Phase Four and Five projects, was fired by Disney on December 18, 2023, following a guilty verdict in his assault trial. Marvel subsequently pivoted away from the Kang storyline entirely.
Joe Russo has described Doom as “three-dimensional” and “one of the most complex comic book characters.” He has stated that Downey was the one person he felt could carry the weight of the role. Downey reportedly developed backstory elements for the character and contributed ideas for the costume design. The Russos, working alongside screenwriter Stephen McFeely, restructured the entire film around this new villain. What was once Avengers: The Kang Dynasty is now Avengers: Doomsday.
The Original Avengers Return
A. The Trinity
Chris Hemsworth returns as Thor Odinson, the Asgardian god of thunder and a founding Avenger. Hemsworth has played Thor since the character’s debut in 2011 and appeared in every Avengers film to date. His return makes Thor the only MCU character confirmed to appear in all five Avengers movies. His most recent solo outing, Thor: Love and Thunder (2022), left the character in a transitional place, and Doomsday is positioned to push him into a new chapter.
Chris Evans returns as Steve Rogers. His involvement was confirmed in December 2024, with the Russos calling Rogers “the character that changed our lives,” adding that they could not imagine telling this story without him having a central role. A teaser released on December 18, 2025, alongside Avatar: Fire and Ash, confirmed that Evans would be reprising the role of Steve Rogers, continuing from his ending in Avengers: Endgame (2019). Importantly, Anthony Mackie holds the Captain America mantle in this film. Evans is playing Steve Rogers, but not necessarily Captain America.
Tom Hiddleston returns as Loki (2021), the god of mischief and one of the MCU’s longest-running characters. Loki’s solo Disney+ series, which wrapped its second season in 2023, placed the character at the center of the multiverse’s timeline mechanics, making his presence in a Multiverse Saga event film a natural fit.
B. The New Cap’s Team
Anthony Mackie leads as Sam Wilson / Captain America, picking up directly from his debut in the role in Captain America: Brave New World (2025). Sebastian Stan returns as Bucky Barnes / Winter Soldier, who, following the events of Thunderbolts* (2025), has been established as the de facto leader of the government-sanctioned New Avengers. Danny Ramirez rounds out this unit as Joaquin Torres / Falcon, the new wingman introduced in Brave New World who takes over the Falcon mantle from Wilson.
C. The Size-Shifters
Paul Rudd is back as Scott Lang / Ant-Man. Rudd’s Lang has deep ties to the quantum realm, a dimension that has become increasingly central to the multiverse’s mechanics since Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania (2023). Rudd, alongside the Russo Brothers, introduced footage from the film at Destination D23 in August 2025.
The Fantastic Four: First Steps Into the MCU
A. The Core Four
The MCU’s version of Marvel’s first family is making the jump into the Avengers fold. Pedro Pascal plays Reed Richards / Mister Fantastic, the team’s leader, with the ability to stretch any part of his body. Vanessa Kirby plays Sue Storm / Invisible Woman, who can generate force fields and turn invisible. Joseph Quinn plays Johnny Storm / Human Torch, Sue’s younger brother with the power to engulf himself in flame. Ebon Moss–Bachrach plays Ben Grimm / The Thing, the rock-skinned powerhouse of the group.
B. The Fox Connection
The Fantastic Four are first introduced in The Fantastic Four: First Steps, which was released on July 25, 2025. That film takes place in an alternate universe, establishing the team before they cross over into the main MCU timeline. Avengers: Doomsday is the film that brings them to Earth-616 to face Doctor Doom alongside the rest of the Avengers. Their presence bridges the gap between the MCU’s existing roster and the broader multiverse.
The X-Men Return: Fox Era Icons Join the MCU
A. The Original Trilogy Stars
This is the section that broke the internet hardest. Six actors from 20th Century Fox’s original X-Men film series are confirmed for the film.
Patrick Stewart returns as Professor Charles Xavier / Professor X, the telepathic leader of the X-Men. Stewart first played the role in 2000’s X-Men and has appeared in multiple entries since, including a memorable cameo in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (2022). Ian McKellen returns as Erik Lehnsherr / Magneto, the master of magnetism, last seen in X-Men: Days of Future Past (2014). James Marsden returns as Scott Summers / Cyclops, the X-Men field leader with powerful optic blasts. Rebecca Romijn returns as Raven Darkhölme / Mystique, the blue-skinned shapeshifter. Alan Cumming returns as Kurt Wagner / Nightcrawler, the teleporting mutant with a demonic appearance. And Kelsey Grammer returns as Hank McCoy / Beast, the blue-furred genius who made a post-credits cameo appearance in The Marvels (2023).
B. The Deadpool Legacy
Channing Tatum returns as Remy LeBeau / Gambit, the mutant with the ability to charge objects with kinetic energy. Tatum debuted in the role in Deadpool & Wolverine (2024), where Gambit’s thick Cajun accent was played for comedy. Ryan Reynolds‘ Deadpool famously quipped about Gambit’s unintelligibility in that film.
For Doomsday, the accent is being dialed back. Tatum told Variety that he’s “not gonna go full Cajun” this time. The Russo Brothers want the film to carry a more dramatic and serious tone compared to the comedic register of Deadpool & Wolverine. Tatum put it plainly: “They want to keep the drama and keep it tight. When Gambit gets serious, when he drops the Mardi Gras mask, things do matter.” The character is confirmed to be the same variant from Deadpool & Wolverine who escaped The Void.
C. Production Notes
Alan Cumming’s return is one of the more compelling behind-the-scenes stories of this production. Cumming had famously avoided reprising Nightcrawler for over two decades, citing the grueling makeup process for X2: X-Men United (2003) as a primary reason. That process took approximately four and a half to five hours per session. For Doomsday, advances in prosthetic technology have reduced the transformation to 90 minutes. The character’s facial tattoos, previously hand-painted individually, now use adhesive appliques that stick directly to the skin.
Cumming described the experience of returning as “really healing.” Speaking to People at the Televerse 2025 conference after wrapping his scenes, he said: “It was amazing. It was actually really, in a sort of ooey, gooey way, really healing and really nice to go back to something that was a terrible experience when I did it the first time.” He has been open about the difficulties of working on the X2 set under director Bryan Singer, calling it “miserable” and “awful for a variety of reasons.” The Doomsday set, by contrast, was the opposite. “Everyone was really nice,” Cumming said. He completed his scenes quickly due to scheduling constraints from The Traitors, condensing his shoot into a tight window using green screen and standalone scene work.
The New Avengers & Thunderbolts
A. Yelena’s Team
The cast of Thunderbolts* (2025) carries directly into Doomsday. That film established its team as the government-sanctioned New Avengers, and those characters now fold into the larger ensemble.
Florence Pugh leads as Yelena Belova / Black Widow, who has stepped into a leadership role following the events of Thunderbolts*. David Harbour returns as Alexei Shostakov / Red Guardian, the Russian super-soldier who brings brute strength and comic relief in equal measure. Hannah John-Kamen returns as Ava Starr / Ghost, the operative with phasing abilities that allow her to pass through solid matter. Wyatt Russell returns as John Walker / U.S. Agent, the volatile, government-backed super-soldier who has been a wildcard in the MCU since The Falcon and the Winter Soldier (2021).
B. The Sentry
Lewis Pullman plays Bob Reynolds / The Sentry, one of the most powerful beings in Marvel Comics lore, described as having the power of a million exploding suns. The character was set up in Thunderbolts* (2025) and now enters the Doomsday ensemble as a significant power player. His abilities could prove essential in any confrontation with Doctor Doom.
The Wakandan Contingent
A. Royal Leadership
Wakanda sends its own representatives into the fight. Letitia Wright returns as Shuri / Black Panther, carrying the mantle she inherited from her brother T’Challa in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (2022). This marks one of her first major appearances as Black Panther from the start of a film. Winston Duke returns as M’Baku, who ascended to the throne of Wakanda following the events of Wakanda Forever.
B. The Undersea Ally
Tenoch Huerta Mejía returns as Namor / Sub-Mariner, the king of Talokan. Namor’s introduction in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever established him as one of the most powerful figures in the MCU, with the flood sequence in that film demonstrating the full extent of his abilities. His alliance with the Wakandans in Doomsday positions him as a critical asset against Doctor Doom.
The Solo Heroes
A. Master of Kung Fu
Simu Liu returns as Xu Shang-Chi, marking his first live-action appearance in the role since Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings (2021). In the years since that film, Liu has voiced the character in animated projects including What If…? and Marvel Zombies, but has not appeared on screen in the role. His return for Doomsday is a significant development, bringing one of the MCU’s most skilled martial artists into the Avengers fold for the first time.
B. The Unaffiliated
Characters like M’Baku, Namor, and Shang-Chi are notable because they do not belong to any of the established team structures. They are not Avengers. They are not X-Men. They are not the Fantastic Four. They represent independent power bases within the MCU. Their inclusion in Doomsday suggests the film’s conflict is large enough to require every available hero, regardless of affiliation.
The Absent Heroes: Who’s Missing (So Far)
| Hero | Actor | Status | Reason |
| Spider-Man | Tom Holland | Unconfirmed | Starring in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, which was released July 31, 2026 |
| Hulk | Mark Ruffalo | Confirmed absent | Starring in Brand New Day; confirmed to Empire, he is not in Doomsday |
| Doctor Strange | Benedict Cumberbatch | Unconfirmed (likely in film) | Initially said he was not in it, then backtracked, saying, “I got that wrong.” |
| Captain Marvel | Brie Larson | Unconfirmed | No official announcement |
| Hawkeye | Jeremy Renner | Unconfirmed | No announcement since Endgame |
| Deadpool | Ryan Reynolds | Unconfirmed | Conflicting reports on involvement |
| Wolverine | Hugh Jackman | Unconfirmed | No official confirmation for Doomsday |
| Scarlet Witch | Elizabeth Olsen | Unconfirmed | The character died in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (2022) |
A note on this table: “unconfirmed” does not mean absent. Marvel has a long history of strategically concealing major cast members to preserve narrative surprises. Benedict Cumberbatch is a prime example. He initially told Variety that Doctor Strange was not in Doomsday because “the character [was] not aligning with this part of the story.” He later told Business Insider: “I got that wrong. I am in the next one.” He then added, with a smirk: “Don’t ever believe anything I say.” Mark Ruffalo is the only actor on this list who has given a definitive answer, confirming to Empire that the Hulk will not appear in the film. Ruffalo is instead appearing as Bruce Banner in Spider-Man: Brand New Day.
Conclusion: The Multiverse Saga Culmination
With 27+ confirmed heroes spanning the MCU’s 18-year history, Fox’s X-Men universe, and the newly introduced Fantastic Four, Avengers: Doomsday represents the largest superhero ensemble ever assembled for a single film. The roster stretches across decades of franchise history and pulls from separate cinematic universes that, until recently, existed independently of one another.
The film’s cast announcement and that marathon livestream of director’s chairs were themselves statements about scope. Every chair mattered. From founding Avengers like Thor and Steve Rogers, to Fox-era icons like Patrick Stewart’s Professor X and Ian McKellen’s Magneto, to new additions like Pedro Pascal’s Reed Richards and Lewis Pullman’s Sentry. The breadth is staggering.
This is Marvel Studios’ answer to a very specific problem. In the years since Avengers: Endgame (2019), the MCU has faced diminishing returns at the box office and increasing skepticism from audiences. Films like The Marvels (2023) underperformed significantly. The Kang storyline, which was supposed to anchor the entire Multiverse Saga, had to be scrapped. The pivot to Doctor Doom, the return of the Russo Brothers, and the decision to bring back legacy actors from the Fox era are all calculated bets.
The bet is that nostalgia for Stewart’s Xavier and Downey’s return, combined with fresh energy from Pascal’s Mister Fantastic and Pugh’s Yelena, creates something audiences genuinely want to see. Whether that bet pays off will not be known until December 18, 2026. But the cast list alone makes a compelling case.
