Alex Kendrick (birthname: Alexander Kendrick) began his career as a Christian evangelical-themed filmmaker while serving as a minister in Albany, Georgia, with the drama Flywheel (2003), for which Kendrick was director/writer/producer/editor/cinematographer/composer and was also in the cast and was released regionally in the South via Carmike Cinemas.
Kendrick’s second feature as director/writer/producer/editor/composer/actor was the sports drama, Facing the Giants (2006), grossing a strong $10 million for distributor Samuel Goldwyn Films/Destination Films. Kendrick’s third Christian feature was Fireproof (2008), on which he was director/writer/producer/editor/actor with cast mates Kirk Cameron and Erin Bethea, and which grossed a notable $33 million for co-distributors Samuel Goldwyn Films/Affirm Films despite very negative reviews.
Kendrick continued his Christian filmmaking success as director/writer/editor/actor with the crime drama, Courageous (2011), released to a solid $35.7 million returns via Sony Pictures Releasing’s Provident Films unit (attached to Sony’s Christian music-based Provident Entertainment) and marked the final movie produced by Kendrick’s Sherwood Pictures.
Alex Kendrick returned to filmmaking after acting in two movies (The Lost Medallion: The Adventures of Billy Stone in 2013 and TriStar Pictures’ faith-based comedy, Moms’ Night Out in 2014, with Sarah Drew, Sean Astin, Patricia Heaton, and Trace Adkins) as director/writer/editor/actor in War Room (2015), with Priscilla Shirer and produced by Sony Pictures’ subsidiaries TriStar Pictures/Provident Films/Affirm Films with Kendrick’s new production company, Kendricks Brothers, and which grossed $74 million globally.
Kendrick served as film editor of writer/director Carey Scott’s Christian drama, Faith of Our Fathers (2015), and as writer/executive producer/actor on Like Arrows (2018), and then returned to directing (as well as writing, editing, and acting) with Overcomer (2019), a sports-themed Christian drama with Shirer and earning $38 million (against $8 million costs) for Sony Pictures Releasing.
Kendrick appeared as himself in the Kendrick Brothers-produced Christian documentary, Show Me the Father (2021), and then Kendrick was the writer/editor/actor in the Christian anti-abortion drama, Lifemark (2022), starring Kirk Cameron and the first Kendrick Brothers movie released by a company other than Sony Pictures (Fathom Events). Kendrick was the director/writer of The Forge (2024), conceived as a spin-off of Kendrick’s War Room, and co-starring Priscilla Shirer, and released by Sony Pictures Releasing and produced via Affirm Films/Provident Films/Kendrick Brothers.
