A burgeoning movie and pop star with roots in musical theater, Dove Cameron (birthname: Chloe Celeste Hosterman) has had two career breakthrough points, first as the star of the Disney Channel film series and spinoff of Disney’s Maleficent (2014)—in which Cameron played Maleficent's daughter, Mal—and next, in 2022, with the release of her first solo album (via Columbia’s Disruptor label) and her first significant co-starring role in B.J. Novak’s black comedy, Vengeance.

Trained in musical comedy and a busy child and teen actor, Cameron landed supporting roles in TV (The Mentalist in 2012, Hairspray Live! in 2016, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. in 2018) and film (the action-comedy Barely Lethal in 2015, the Dolly Parton musical Dumplin’ in 2018, with Jennifer Aniston).

Cameron’s second hit series for Disney Channel was Liv and Maddie (2013-2017), winning a Daytime Emmy Award for Outstanding Performer in Children’s Programming. After being associated for several years with Disney’s world of children and teen-oriented entertainments, Cameron has made a pronounced shift into adult material, particularly with her co-starring role in the violent, psychodrama, Isaac (2022), with Breaking Bad’s RJ Mitte, in Novak’s black comedy, Vengeance, and in her erotic, lesbian-themed music video for her 2022 single, “Boyfriend,” a personal statement on Cameron’s declared sexual identification as queer.

Dove Cameron was born and raised in Bainbridge Island, Washington by parents Bonnie Wallace, an acting coach, and Philip Hosterman, CEO/founder of Kandahar Trading Company. Her older sister is Claire Hosterman. She was a student at Sakai Intermediate School. Relocating to Los Angeles with her family when she was 14, Cameron attended Burbank High School, where she was a member of the school’s National Championship-winning Show Choir. Her father died when she was 15, and she legally changed her name in honor of him, since his nickname for her was “Dove.” Cameron has identified as bisexual and queer and has written on Instagram about her challenges with depression and dysphoria. She was in a relationship with actor and fellow Liv and Maddie cast member Ryan McCartan from 2013 to 2016, but the couple called off their April 2016 engagement in October of that year. Cameron’s height is 5’ 2”.

Bully Victim: Dove Cameron has spoken publicly about her experiences enduring bullying in school from fifth grade through high school. She has also suffered, partly as a result of this, from depression and dysphoria, a condition which is the opposite of euphoria. Recording Star: As a singer and lead performer on the Disney TV film franchise, Descendants, Dove Cameron has covered Imagine Dragons’ single, “On Top of the World,” leading to two songs landing on Billboard magazine’s Hot 100 chart, “Rotten to the Core” and “If Only,” followed by other songs in the film series, including “Set It Off” and “Evil Like Me,” as well as her cover of Christina Aguilera’s “Genie in a Bottle.” Cameron signed with the Columbia Records label, Disruptor Records, in 2018, leading to the release of several singles, including the disco-pop “LazyBaby,” all of which have been removed from music platforms in March 2022 in advance of her first Disruptor/Columbia solo studio album. The first single from this album is “Boyfriend,” which dropped in February 2022. Short-Lived Band: With her Liv and Maddie co-star Ryan McCartan, Dove Cameron formed the band The Girl and the Dreamcatcher in 2015, recording six singles and four additional songs on an EP, Negatives, released in 2016. The band dissolved at the time of Cameron’s and McCartan’s personal breakup.
